The Ford Explorer comes as standard with a 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque 3.5 liter V6 which is plenty powerful for pretty much anything but it isn’t exactly economical. The less powerful 216 horsepower EcoBoost is a great choice for fuel economy, being able to return in excess of 30 MPG while on the highway but it isn’t exactly cheap, being almost 2000$ more expensive than the base V6.
The most powerful unit is the twin-turbo 3.5 liter EcoBoost, being capable of around 350 horsepower and just as much torque. All the engines are available with all wheel drive except the 2 liter EcoBoost that is only available with front wheel drive.
The Grand Cherokee on the other hand is a totally different beast. The base engine is a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 that puts out 290 horsepower. There are also available a 5.7 liter V8 Hemi that develops 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque or a 6.4 liter Hemi V8 with over 470 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. There is also a diesel option that isn’t as powerful but has all the torque very low in the rev range, so it is pretty good for people that want to tow heavy loads.
Design – Interior and exterior
Both cars feature a striking exterior with straight line that offer these cars a very aggressive look. The interiors on the other hand is a big different. Both of them are SUVs so the inside space is pretty similar. The Ford offers as standard a 7 seat configuration while the Jeep only has 5 seats as standard. Material selection is good in both of them but the Jeep is more upmarket, so it has as standard leather upholstery and aluminium trimmings while the Ford has to with just cloth upholstery as standard. Both cars though feature satellite navigation and superior audio systems as standard while a moon-roof is optional on both of them.

Both the Ford Explorer and the Jeep Grand Cherokee start at roughly 30.000$ and for the price, the Jeep is a bit better equipped with a more fuel efficient engine and four wheel drive. The top of the range model are miles apart when it comes to their engine. The Ford comes with a twin turbo V6 that is powerful enough for most applications while the Jeep comes with an aspirated monster that is more powerful but less fuel efficient.
